Projects
Here are some of the various musical projects and collaborations Michael is involved in.
Hannah & Michael
Fiddler and singer-songwriter Hannah Read met banjo player Michael Starkey at an Appalachian old time session in Edinburgh in late 2019. The moment they first struck up a tune together there was an immediate meeting of musical minds. They have since become a dynamic fiddle and banjo duo, playing repertoire deep from the old time tradition as well as newly self-composed tunes and songs. Their compelling sound can be heard on the debut album Cross the Rolling Water out on Hudson Records in June 2022.
Website LabelWayward Jane
Wayward Jane’s music is an innovative ‘transatlantic’ interpretation of American folk and Old Time traditions, blending roots material with fresh arrangements and original compositions. Their rich sound features fiddle, clawhammer banjo, double bass, guitar, wooden flute and close vocal harmonies.
Wayward Jane’s live shows have a joyful energy, expressing the fine musicianship of the band members as well as the friendship and playful chemistry that exists between them. Ranging in mood from high-octane, toe-tapping tunes to tender and soulful songs, Wayward Jane tend to leave audiences with a glow in their hearts.
Website BandcampFaultline
Faultline is a collection from celebrated Scotland-based poet Lisa Fannen, published in November 2018. The poems are political and personal (and an examination of where those territories meet), observational and contemplative, and travel through explorations of social inequality, police violations, street homelessness in the US, environmental disaster, intimate experiences of queer sexuality, rites of passage and bereavement, also the power of guidance and renewal.
Website BandcampHog-Eyed Man
Hog-eyed Man is an Athens-based acoustic band comprised of fiddler Jason Cade and multi-instrumentalist Rob McMaken. Drawing primarily on the archaic tunes and pre-radio aesthetics of Southern Appalachian fiddling traditions, Jason and Rob have forged a compelling and authentic style of oldtime music, both reflecting deep respect for the past masters and carrying the musical conversation forward to the present era.
